A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
